Platelet Rich Plasma – PRP is an emerging non-surgical injection therapy in the treatment of the spine and peripheral joints. This includes all associated soft tissues: tendons, ligaments, cartilage, labrum, meniscus, and discs.
It represents a pillar in the emerging field of “Orthobiologics,” which utilizes and capitalizes on the body’s innate healing ability. Chronic degenerative diseases, such as osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and tendinopathy, now have a safe and effective solution for healing, and an alternative for surgery.
Current musculoskeletal care for spine and joint disease focuses heavily upon symptom management with corticosteroids and NSAIDs. PRP and orthobiologic regenerative medicine instead focuses on diagnosing and solving the problem. It is a “disease modifying therapy” rather than a palliative therapy.
Precise diagnosis, and precision therapy is paramount in the success of regenerative medicine therapies.
How It Works
Clinical use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been reported since the early 1990s for oral maxillofacial surgery as a source of growth factors to increase the rate and degree of bone formation. PRP was initially used over 20 years ago in the Dental community to enhance wound healing in cancer patients with jaw reconstruction. Soon afterwards, its applications extended across many fields of medicine, from cardiovascular surgery to orthopedics. Multiple studies are underway to help further refine the treatment and demonstrate its efficacy.
In the last 25 years we have learned that, when activated in the body, platelets release healing proteins called growth factors. There are many growth factors with varying responsibilities; however, cumulatively they accelerate tissue and wound healing. Therefore, after increasing the baseline concentration of these platelets, we are able to deliver a powerful cocktail of growth factors that can dramatically enhance tissue recovery.
We have also learned much about PRP from the veterinary medical world, especially equine medicine, i.e., Race Horses. Because there is no placebo effect, and litigation is virtually non-existent in the animal medicine world, PRP and many other cutting edge therapies have proliferated. PRP is a known quantity for race horses and is widely used and respected.
PRP is a virtual cocktail of proteins that collectively stimulate repair and regeneration.
As a recognized international expert in the field of Orthobiologics (PRP and regenerative medicine), Dr. Desai has performed hundreds of PRP, bone marrow aspirate, lipo-aspiration of fat, and AmnioFix (amniotic membrane derived growth factors) injections. He has given numerous presentations around the world, as well as published articles and book chapters concerning such cutting edge topics. He continues to educate and learn from the global medical community that is inspired by this revolutionary medicine. RestorePDX will continue to push the envelope, as we evaluate the new frontier of orthobiologics.
Because PRP utilizes the body’s own innate healing potential, we have learned that each patient is unique and a “one size fits all” approach is not the ideal. At RestorePDX we integrate the latest innovations like photomodulation, cytokine therapy, hormone therapy, and specific supplements for tendon and cartilage to compliment PRP therapy. With the incorporation of these adjuncts, precise definition of the pathology via 1.5 & 3-Tesla MRI, and our skilled technique utilizing ultrasound guidance, we see improved results with much less post injection pain. We have trained physicians from all over the world utilizing our advanced techniques.
